Complimentary QPR Gatekeeper Training for Suicide Prevention

Published: Jul 2, 2021

Over the past several years, numerous publications, conferences and veterinary organizations have shined a spotlight on the state of wellbeing in veterinary medicine. As your membership organization, it is both our responsibility and our desire to provide you with access to resources and support that can help you, as individuals and professionals in the veterinary community, thrive. As one step this direction, we are sharing a potentially lifesaving resource.

There are three steps anyone can learn to help prevent suicide: question, persuade and refer (QPR). Just like CPR, QPR is an emergency response to someone in crisis and can save lives. QPR is a way to talk with and intervene with someone who may be suicidal.

Compliments of the AVMA, AVMA Life and AVMA PLIT, all members of the veterinary community have access to a 60-minute self-paced online course that teaches people without professional mental health backgrounds to recognize the warning signs of suicide, common causes of suicidal behavior, how to question, persuade and refer someone who may be suicidal and how to get help for someone in a crisis.
