The Robert W. Kirk Award for Professional Excellence provides an avenue for recognition of outstanding achievements and dedicated service to the veterinary profession by ACVIM Diplomates. Recipients have outstanding careers in veterinary medicine with national and international recognition for their contributions and service in such activities as clinical medical practice, instruction, research and/or public service. Nominations are accepted annually.

2023 Recipient:

Peter Constable, BVSc, PhD, MS, DACVIM (LAIM, Nutrition)

Before becoming Dean of the University of Illinois College of Veterinary Medicine in 2014, Dr. Peter Constable served on the Illinois faculty in the food animal section for 13 years. A native Australian, Dean Constable earned his veterinary degree in 1982 from the University of Melbourne. He practiced in Australia and England and went on to complete an ambulatory internship and food animal medicine and surgery residency at The Ohio State University. He earned both a master’s and a PhD in cardiovascular physiology at OSU. As a clinician and researcher, Dean Constable studied acid-base physiology, fluid therapy, shock, calf diarrhea, surgical conditions of the bovine abdomen, biostatistics, pharmacokinetic modeling, veterinary education and the cardiovascular response to endurance training. He has published more than 190 peer-reviewed articles and 30 book chapters and is a co-author of Veterinary Medicine: A Textbook of the Diseases of Cattle, Horses, Sheep, Pigs, and Goats, now in its eleventh edition.
