Clinical Communication Workshop for Specialists and Candidates
Course Overview
This three-module, on-demand course explores essential concepts and tools for clinical communication in veterinary medicine for specialists and candidates. Based on the Calgary-Cambridge veterinary communication model, participants will develop an understanding and familiarity with existing terminology and review of the evidence behind clinical communication as a skillset that is both useful and expandable. Modules includes foundational topics for using communication to achieve clinical goals as well as in-depth discussion and application of core communication skills.

At the end of the course, participants gain increased understanding of:
- Existence and role of interpersonal perceptions and assumptions in clinical communication.
- Concept of intentional communication.
- Ways to think about communication skills/domains of communication.
- The goal of connecting with the client as partner in care in a sustainable way, without allowing mistreatment/disrespect, etc.
- Familiarity and tools for meaningful application of communication skills such as: open-ended questions, reflective statements, empathy, nonverbal communication, chunk and check, pause, ask, and signposting.
