New Login Process for RTP and Fellowship Applications

We are transitioning to a new RTP and Fellowship Application platform provider, requiring all users to temporarily change login credentials. To access the current application system, please use the “Forgot Password” functionality on the login page. For assistance or for new account set-up, please contact Certification@ACVIM.org.

Each specialty has a Residency Training Committee that specifies training criteria that must be met for certification. This committee will review training programs submitted by institutions and residents and rule on their acceptability.

All Residency Training Programs must have a designated Program Director (see Section 4.D.2. of the Certification Manual). The Program Director is responsible for submitting the original residency training program registration information as well an annual renewal. Program renewal information will be sent to Program Directors. All Residency Training Programs must be approved prior to any residents starting their training program.

Registration documents, instructions and general information for each specialty can be found by clicking on the following links.

RTP Relocation Requests

On occasion, an ACVIM candidate either wishes or needs to leave their current RTP and is then required to complete their training requirements in a new program. Although residency relocations are not encouraged, the ACVIM recognizes that, at times, it is necessary and will support those relocation requests through a predefined process. For more information or to initiate an RTP relocation request, please contact the ACVIM staff at Certification@ACVIM.org.

Candidates are also encouraged to contact their specialty ombudsperson in situations of relocation. Contact information for each specialty can be found below. The purpose of the ACVIM Ombudsperson (Ombuds) is to serve as a neutral, independent and impartial resource for residents in training, or post residency Candidates actively pursuing Board-certification, to provide guidance in resolving concerns, conflicts, or complaints in a confidential and informal manner. These concerns may be regarding a Residency Training Program (RTP) and/or training officer (i.e., Program Director, Resident Advisor or Supervising Diplomate) or with the ACVIM Board-certification process (i.e., change in status, communications with the Central Office). RTP Fees FAQs

Is the application fee applied per institution?

The fee is per Residency Training Program (RTP) application/renewal.

I have two RTP's within the same specialty, do I only pay the fee once?

You will need to pay the fee for each applicant/renewal you submit.

Why is a fee being requested at this time?

Fees are being implemented at this time in order to help offset the rising costs of software development, maintenance, and the overall operations required to approve, oversee and support residency training programs. Our first priority will be to enhance the technology used to manage RTP compliance.

Do I have to pay the fee if I don't have or plan on having an active resident?

If you plan to keep your program in active status (i.e., it is reviewed by the Residency Training Committee (RTC)), then you will be required to pay the fee.

What is the current fee structure?

This is an annual fee of $230.

Does this apply to new or renewal relocation RTP applications as well?

Yes, the fee applies to all applications.

If my program withdraws after being approved will refund be given?

No refund will be issued after a program has been approved.

Why made the decision to implement a fee for RTP's?

This decision was made by the Board of Regents after a long period of discussion and careful consideration.
