DNA Deep Dive: Incorporating Genetics into Veterinary Cardiology to Enhance Diagnosis, Prognosis, and Treatment

Course Overview

This on-demand course will provide an in-depth look at the most common inherited heart diseases and how our patient’s genetic architecture impacts their response to medical therapies. As our knowledge of veterinary genetics continues to expand, understanding how to incorporate genetic testing and counseling into veterinary cardiology case evaluations and therapeutic management grows more important. Our speakers will address mitral valve degeneration, arrhythmogenic cardiomyopathy, dilated cardiomyopathy, hypertrophic cardiomyopathy, drug resistance, and the interface between each of these topics and canine and feline genetics. The content will focus on a current understanding of genetic etiology of disease and the practical application of this knowledge in the clinic.

This course was made possible thanks to the generous support of MOVES.

Agenda

Learning objectives:

By the end of the course, you will be able to:

  1. Describe the role of genetic testing in veterinary cardiology practice.
  2. Interpret genetic test results and recall the relevant literature that informs disease prognosis and management.
  3. Identify the role of pharmacogenetics and how knowledge of pharmacogenetics can impact case management.
  4. Understand the variety of mechanisms by which experts in the field are utilizing genetics in practicing veterinary cardiology.

Key differentiators:

  1. This course brings together cutting-edge research and veterinary cardiologists using this research to share their knowledge and experience.

  2. Attendees will gain practical knowledge and skills to apply genetic and pharmacogenetic testing that enhances their patient care.

Dr. Stern serves as an Associate Editor for the Journal of Veterinary Internal Medicine and is the current President for the Subspecialty of Cardiology in the American College of Veterinary Internal Medicine. He was honored with the 2024 AVMF Career Achievement Award in Feline Medicine. Dr. Stern is an avid supporter of clinician scientists and is passionate about training the next generation of veterinary academic leaders. Together, with his laboratory teams, Dr. Stern has published over 140 peer-reviewed research manuscripts contributing to the advancement of companion animal genetics and translational cardiology.
