Product Insights: Clinical Updates- Unlocking MDR1 Mutants in Cats: Prevalence, Perils & Protocols

Course Overview

Join us for an evidence-based CE update on feline MDR1 (ABCB1). We will discuss the feline ABCB1 c.1930_1931delTC variant, a key loss-of-function mutation, that can cause neurotoxicity following exposure to certain antiparasitic and MDR1 substrate drugs. This session will cover ABCB1 essentials, including how this 2-bp deletion may place homozygous variant (-/-) cats at high risk. We will also review new data from the largest screening study to date of 12,000 U.S. domestic pet cats, demonstrating that this mutation is rare. Actionable takeaways include prescribing P-gp substrates with confidence in most cases and knowing when to genotype at-risk cats or breeds such as Maine Coons and Ragdolls.

  1. Learn the function of the feline ABCB1 (MDR1) gene and identify the pharmacologic risks associated with ABCB1 deficiency, including susceptibility to neurotoxicity from P-glycoprotein substrate drugs. 
  2. Explain the clinical significance of the c.1930_1931delTC loss-of-function variant in cats.
  3. Interpret current prevalence data from large-scale U.S. screening studies and assess the overall risk of this mutation in the general feline population. 
  4. Apply evidence-based prescribing and testing strategies by determining when genotyping is warranted, particularly in at-risk cats or breeds.

Meet the Instructors

Jeba Jesudoss Chelladurai, BVSc, MS, PhD, DACVM
Assistant Professor
Auburn University

Dr. Jesudoss Chelladurai joined the Auburn University College of Veterinary Medicine in August 2024. She received her BVSc from Madras Veterinary College, Tamil Nadu Veterinary and Animal Sciences University, Chennai, India. She received an MS in microbiology from North Dakota State University and a PhD in veterinary pathology (emphasis area: parasitology) from Iowa State University. She is ACVM board certified in veterinary parasitology and veterinary immunology. She will be finishing her training in bioinformatics through the University of Birmingham in early 2025. She was previously an Assistant Professor in the Department of Diagnostic Medicine/Pathobiology in the College of Veterinary Medicine at Kansas State University. Dr. Jesudoss Chelladurai is currently an Assistant Professor at Auburn University College of Veterinary Medicine. Her current research focuses on understanding mechanisms of susceptibility and resistance in helminths of veterinary importance.

Dr. Ohmes, is a large animal veterinary internal medicine specialist and parasitology researcher with more than 13 years of experience advancing companion animal health. Her work has focused on the prevention, diagnosis, and management of parasitic diseases, with a particular emphasis on translating scientific research into practical solutions for veterinarians and pet owners. Dr. Ohmes is a board member for the American Heartworm Society and has previously served on the boards of the Companion Animal Parasite Council (CAPC) and the National Center for Veterinary Parasitology (NCVP).
