Course Overview

This course is designed with specialists in mind. Through the use of demo lectures and customizable hands-on ultrasound wet labs, attendees will have the opportunity to personalize the labs to address their specific learning needs and further enhance their proficiency in abdominal ultrasound. The labs are designed to maximize the scanning time in small group environments, guided by Diplomates of the American College of Veterinary Radiology. Instructors will be available to help guide attendee learning and individualize what participants are working on based on what they would like to accomplish in the labs.

Agenda

By the end of the course, you will be able to:

  1. Create and maintain the optimal image on your ultrasound machine in dogs and cats
  2. Understand probe selection
  3. Recognize normal and abnormal appearance of the liver and spleen, including utilization of the intercostal windows and interrogating the biliary system
  4. Recognize normal and abnormal appearance of the kidneys and bladder
  5. Recognize normal and abnormal appearance of the GI tract and pancreas
  6. Recognize normal and abnormal appearance of the adrenal glands and abdominal lymph nodes
  7. Understand and perform ultrasound guided aspirate techniques

Meet the Instructors

Sippel
Kate Sippel DVM, DACVR
COURSE LEADER
Clinical Assistant Professor, Diagnostic Imaging
University of Florida

Dr. Kate Sippel earned her bachelor’s degree in biology at Colorado College in Colorado Springs and her Doctor of Veterinary Medicine from the University of Illinois in Urbana.  She completed her residency in diagnostic imaging at Michigan State University.  Dr. Sippel works with private practices, universities, and in telemedicine. She also works for IDEXX and has lectured nationally and internationally on numerous imaging topics. Dr. Sippel is an avid horseback rider competing in Jumper events across the country.

Nate Nelson, DVM, MS, DACVR
Associate Professor of Diagnostic Imaging
North Carolina State University

Nathan C. Nelson, DVM, MS, DACVR, is an associate professor of diagnostic imaging at North Carolina State University. He attended The Ohio State University for both undergraduate and veterinary education, followed by an internship at Michigan State University. He returned to Ohio State for diagnostic imaging residency and was fortunate to train with a wide variety of species using modern equipment. Following residency, he returned to Michigan State University to work as a radiologist for 9 years, prior to recently joining the faculty at North Carolina State University.

Elodie Huget, DVM, DACVR
Clinical Assistant Professor
Diagnostic Imaging, University of Florida

Elodie grew up in France before moving to South Carolina in 2001. She obtained her veterinary degree at the University of Georgia and pursued her radiology interest with a one-year internship at Virginia Equine Imaging in Middleburg, VA.  She then completed a small animal rotating internship at BluePearl Veterinary Partners in Louisville, KY followed by a radiology internship at Veterinary Specialty Hospital of the Carolinas in North Carolina. Following the completion of her radiology internship, Elodie accepted a radiology residency at Veterinary Specialty Hospital of the Carolinas and then joined the UF diagnostic imaging team in 2019 to complete her residency. Elodie is now a clinical assistant professor of Diagnostic Imaging at the University of Florida and works part-time for IDEXX teleradiology.

Huynh
Elizabeth Huynh, DVM, DACVR
Board-Certified Veterinary Radiologist

Elizabeth Huynh DVM, MS, DACVR is a board-certified veterinary radiologist who works in private practice and teleradiology and is based in Southern California.

She obtained her Doctorate of Veterinary Medicine from Ross University and subsequently did a small animal rotating internship at Atlantic Veterinary College in Prince Edward Island. She further pursued her diagnostic imaging education by completing a year imaging internship at Animal Specialty and Emergency Center and a four-year imaging residency at University of Florida where she also completed a Master’s degree. She is a member of the American College of Veterinary Radiology.

In her free time, she enjoys traveling, yoga, and spending time with her four dogs. Dr. Huynh is dedicated to continuing education for veterinarians in abdominal ultrasonography and providing high-quality imaging reports to her patients and clients.

Shigemoto
Reynsen Shigemoto, DVM, MS, DACVR
Board-Certified Veterinary Radiologist

Dr. Reynsen Shigemoto received his veterinary degree from Colorado State University in 2007. After graduating, Dr. Shigemoto completed an internship with VCA West Los Angeles Animal Hospital. His next two years were spent as the medical director at Animal Imaging Center in Los Angeles. Dr. Shigemoto went on to a radiology residency at the University of Florida, which he completed in 2013, and subsequently became board certified in Radiology with the American College of Veterinary Radiology. ​Dr. Shigemoto has always had veterinary medicine in his heart. He decided on his career path in high school, chose radiology as his specialty before he entered vet school and worked as a veterinary technician during college.
